Dua after wudu: words and meaning

The words reported for after wudu, with pronunciation and meaning, how the two Muslim wordings differ, and how the extra repentance supplication in Tirmidhi is graded.

By Haroon AliSources checked 24 October 2026

We explain and attribute; we do not issue fatwas.

The short answer

The dua after wudu in Sahih Muslim 234b (graded sahih) is the testimony of faith, said after doing wudu (also spelt wudhu), the washing for prayer. 'Uqba ibn 'Amir, may Allah be pleased with him, reported it from the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him. A longer supplication in Jami' at-Tirmidhi 55 is graded differently.

What is the dua after wudu?

'Uqba reported that the Prophet said: whoever does wudu and then says these words. A hadith is a report about the Prophet, and this one is Sahih Muslim 234b.

Sahih Muslim 234b

أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لاَ شَرِيكَ لَهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ

Ashhadu an lā ilāha illā llāhu waḥdahu lā sharīka lahu, wa ashhadu anna Muḥammadan ʿabduhu wa rasūluh.

I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, alone, without partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger.

1AuthenticSahih Muslim 234b

The report gives no number of repetitions and no gesture. It says it narrated the report before it, Sahih Muslim 234a, "like" that one except for these words, and it does not repeat the reward (see below).

What do the words mean?

The clauses are short. This breakdown is our learning aid: the report does not divide the words this way.

Arabic reads right to left, so the first word is on the right.

  1. أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُashhadu an lā ilāha illā llāhuI bear witness that there is no god but Allah
  2. وَحْدَهُwaḥdahualone
  3. لاَ شَرِيكَ لَهُlā sharīka lahuwithout partner
  4. وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًاwa ashhadu anna Muḥammadanand I bear witness that Muhammad
  5. عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُʿabduhu wa rasūluhis His servant and His Messenger

What does the report say about its reward?

Sahih Muslim 234a (graded sahih) is the longer narration, and it holds two separate sayings. In the first, which 'Uqba heard from the Prophet himself, a Muslim who does wudu well and then prays two rak'ahs (cycles of prayer) with heart and face has Paradise due to him.

In the second, 'Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, says he saw 'Uqba arrive just now. The report then gives a saying, introduced only by "he said", about completing wudu and saying the testimony: the eight gates of Paradise are opened for him, to enter by whichever he wishes. Jami' at-Tirmidhi 55 (graded differently), below, gives a related saying from 'Umar as the Prophet's words.

2AuthenticSahih Muslim 234a

Each saying has its own reward in the report, and this page does not join them. The eight counts the gates of Paradise. Neither Muslim report gives a number of times to say the testimony.

How do Muslim 234a, 234b and Tirmidhi 55 differ?

The three reports give related but different wording after wudu. This page compares only these three. The Arabic and pronunciation at the top are the wording of 234b; the others are shown as they stand in their own reports.

Sahih Muslim 234a, graded sahih'Uqba, who also reports 'Umar's wordsأَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ وَرَسُولُهُ

  • Sahih Muslim 234a lacks waḥdahu lā sharīka lahu, "alone, without partner". 234b and Tirmidhi 55 have it.
  • The testimony in 234a has one ashhadu and then wa anna Muḥammadan ʿabdu llāhi wa rasūluh, "and that Muhammad is the servant of Allah and His Messenger". 234b and Tirmidhi 55 repeat ashhadu and say ʿabduhu, "His servant".
  • Only Tirmidhi 55 has the supplication after the testimony.

What about the extra supplication in Tirmidhi 55?

Jami' at-Tirmidhi 55 (graded differently) adds a supplication after the testimony, and then the eight gates. Its Arabic is below.

Jami' at-Tirmidhi 55

اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْنِي مِنَ التَّوَّابِينَ وَاجْعَلْنِي مِنَ الْمُتَطَهِّرِينَ

Allāhumma jʿalnī mina t-tawwābīn, wajʿalnī mina l-mutaṭahhirīn.

O Allah, make me among those who repent, and make me among those who purify themselves.

3Graded differently Jami' at-Tirmidhi 55

This report is graded differently. In our record, five named graders accept the report or its addition (two of these entries could not be traced to a named report, and one grader supplies most of the accepting entries), and five named graders call its chain broken, inconsistent or defective. Some of the uncounted remarks favour the version without the addition. The display grade on sunnah.com, from a publisher, is weak. Eight further remarks, from six graders, are listed in the sources but not counted as gradings. This page does not rule on whether to say the extra supplication.

These are different kinds of statement: some grade the addition on its own, some the whole report, some the chain. The collection's own comment says the chain has inconsistency (idtirab) and that little of significance is authentic from the Prophet on this topic. The grading covers Tirmidhi 55 and its addition only. It does not carry over to Muslim 234a or 234b, which do not contain the supplication. The list holds the gradings located on 24 October 2026, not every grader who has discussed the report.

What about a dua before or during wudu?

Each of the three reports contains words said after wudu. None gives words for the start of wudu or a separate wording for each limb. That is the scope of these three reports, not a claim to have searched every narration. For the order of washing, see how to perform wudu. For what the phrase Bismillah means, see the Bismillah lesson.

I knew the words after wudu long before I knew where they came from. Seeing which report they are in, and that the extra dua is graded differently, made me careful about what I attach to them.

Try it: what would you say?

Pick an answer; each one explains itself.

  1. 1Which clause does Sahih Muslim 234b have that the testimony in 234a does not?

Answer: Wahdahu la sharika lahu, "alone, without partner". The Arabic of 234b includes "alone, without partner"; 234a goes straight to "and that Muhammad is the servant of Allah and His Messenger". The supplication is in Jami' at-Tirmidhi 55, not in either Muslim report. Source 1

  2. 2Does "eight" in Sahih Muslim 234a mean saying the testimony eight times?

Answer: No, it counts the gates of Paradise. The report speaks of the eight gates of Paradise being opened. It gives no number of times to say the words. Source 2

  3. 3How is the supplication Allahumma jʿalnī mina t-tawwābīn labelled here?

Answer: Graded differently. Jami' at-Tirmidhi 55 has gradings that accept it and gradings that call its chain broken or defective, so the label is "graded differently", never "authentic". Source 3

Questions people ask

What is the dua after wudu in English?

Sahih Muslim 234b (graded sahih) gives the meaning as: I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, alone, without partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger. 'Uqba ibn 'Amir, may Allah be pleased with him, reported the words from the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him.

Do I say the dua after wudu once or several times?

The reports on this page give no number of repetitions. In Sahih Muslim 234a (graded sahih) the word eight counts the gates of Paradise, not the times the words are said.

Is there a dua to say before or during wudu?

Sahih Muslim 234a and 234b (graded sahih) and Jami' at-Tirmidhi 55 (graded differently) are the reports compared here, and each of the three contains words said after wudu. None gives words for the start of wudu or a wording for each limb. This page has not searched every report, so for the washing itself use the wudu guide.
