Work out your zakat

1. What you own
Enter gold or silver by weight, in grams or tola
Gold
Silver

Value by weight: £0.00

Each weight needs its own price per gram: a weight with no price adds nothing, and the nisab prices below are not used for it. 1 tola = 11.664 g: our division of Darul Ifta Birmingham's 87.48 g by its 7.5 tola. What you enter here is added to your total, so do not also include it in "Gold and silver, by value": that would count it twice.

2. Debts you take off
3. The nisab, gold and silver separately

The nisab is the minimum wealth on which zakat is due. Two weights are named, and each metal gets its own result. Enter today's price per gram for each, the date you took it and where it came from. A price with no date, or more than 7 days old, is not used.

Gold nisab: 87.48 g

Enter a price and its date.

Silver nisab: 612.36 g

Enter a price and its date.

The weights are 87.48 g of gold and 612.36 g of silver, as Islamic Relief Worldwide and Darul Ifta Birmingham give them 10 8. Other bodies use 85 g and 595 g 9. Which weights and which metal to follow has been marked for fiqh review; ask a scholar you trust.

Ilmwell explains and attributes; we do not issue fatwas. This calculator is not a fatwa and not financial advice: it does arithmetic on the figures you enter. For your own situation, ask a scholar you trust, and an accountant for the figures.

This zakat calculator totals your wealth minus the debts you take off and checks it against the nisab: the value of 612.36 g of silver or 87.48 g of gold. At or above it, it shows 2.5%, the quarter of a tenth the four school works give once a lunar year has passed. You enter dated metal prices, and nothing leaves your device.

How do you calculate zakat?

Here is how to calculate zakat in four steps, one for each part of the calculator. Our zakat guide sets out the four schools' conditions in full.

  1. Add up what you own

Count cash at home, bank and savings balances, gold and silver, and any other wealth you decide is zakatable, meaning zakat is due on it. The International Islamic Fiqh Academy, in Resolution 21 (1986), holds that paper money takes the rulings set for gold and silver, including zakat 7. Shares, pensions and money owed to you are not discussed in the sources here.

  2. Take off debts

Al-Marghinani (Hanafi), in al-Hidayah 1/95, says a person whose debt to others takes up all his wealth owes no zakat, and he reports al-Shafi'i as saying zakat is still due in that case. One whose wealth exceeds his debt pays on the surplus if it reaches a nisab 2. The other three schools' views on debt are not cited, and none of these passages discusses a mortgage, a credit card or a student loan.

  3. Compare the total with the nisab

The four school works cited here set the nisab at 20 mithqals of gold or 200 dirhams of silver 2 3 4 5. Darul Ifta Birmingham, in fatwa 07042, gives these as 87.48 g of gold (7.5 tola) and 612.36 g of silver (52.5 tola) 8, the figures this calculator uses. IslamWeb fatwa 120628 accepts 85 g and 595 g 9. Grams times the price per gram gives the nisab in pounds.

  4. 2.5% once a lunar year has passed

The four works make zakat on gold and silver due once a year has passed over a full nisab. The rate is a quarter of a tenth 2 3 4 5. Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, reported the letter Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, wrote setting out the sadaqah the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, laid down. It includes "on silver, a quarter of a tenth" (Sahih al-Bukhari 1454, graded sahih) 1. A quarter of a tenth is 1/40, which is 2.5%.

Egypt's Dar al-Ifta, in fatwa 8124, told a business owner that the year that counts is the lunar Hijri year, which its formula takes as 354 days 6. The Islamic date tool shows today's Hijri date, if you want to note your zakat date.

What does a zakat calculation look like?

An illustration only. The prices below are made up to keep the arithmetic easy. They are not real prices, and the result is not an assessment of what anyone owes.

The same savings measured against each nisab, with made-up prices
Cash and savings£6,000
Debts taken off£1,000
Zakatable total£6,000 minus £1,000 = £5,000
Silver nisab at £1.00 a gram612.36 × £1.00 = £612.36, so the total is above it
2.5% of the total£5,000 × 0.025 = £125.00
Gold nisab at £100 a gram87.48 × £100 = £8,748, so the total is below it and the calculator shows £0.00

With these prices, the same £5,000 is above the silver nisab and below the gold one, so the basis you pick can decide whether anything is due.

Which nisab should I use, gold or silver?

The calculator shows both side by side and does not choose for you. Darul Ifta Birmingham's fatwa 07042, written by Mufti Mohammed Dilwar Hussain and approved by Mufti Mohammed Tosir Miah, says calculating with either the gold or the silver equivalent is valid. It calls the silver threshold extremely advisable for someone with sufficient disposable income, and says this is only advice 8. IslamWeb fatwa 120628 reports that a few scholars value paper money by gold in all cases, while the majority value it by the lower of the two nisabs 9. Follow your school or a scholar you trust.

How do you calculate zakat on gold?

To calculate zakat on gold, find its value first: the weight in grams times the price per gram. In the calculator, open "Enter gold or silver by weight", type the weight in grams or tola and the price per gram, and the value joins your total. For tola it uses 1 tola = 11.664 g, our division of Darul Ifta Birmingham's 87.48 g for 7.5 tola; its 612.36 g for 52.5 tola gives the same 8.

Illustration only: 10 tola is 10 × 11.664 = 116.64 g. At a made-up price of £100 a gram that is £11,664 of gold, and 2.5% of it would be £291.60 if all of it counted and the year had passed.

Is zakat due on gold jewellery?

The schools differ, and the calculator leaves it to you what to enter. One work from each school:

  • Hanafi Al-Marghinani, al-Hidayah 1/103: zakat is due on raw gold and silver, their jewellery and their vessels. He records that al-Shafi'i disagreed about women's jewellery 2.
  • Maliki Ibn 'Abd al-Barr, al-Kafi 1/286: no zakat on jewellery made for women's adornment, not for trade or hire. Jewellery for trade carries it, and jewellery for hire is disputed 3.
  • Shafi'i Abu Shuja', al-Ghayah wa al-Taqrib, with al-Ghazzi's Fath al-Qarib p. 128: no zakat on permitted jewellery. Al-Ghazzi adds that prohibited pieces, such as a man's bracelet, carry it 4.
  • Hanbali Al-Buhuti, Kashshaf al-Qina' 5/17: no zakat on permitted gold or silver jewellery kept for use or lending, even before it is worn or lent 5.

Whether your own pieces count, and whether to count a piece's full weight or only its gold, is a question for a scholar you trust.

The first year I worked out my own zakat, I did it on the back of an envelope at the kitchen table and got three different totals. In the end I sat down with my dad, listed every account and the bit of gold I had, and went through it line by line.

Questions people ask

How do I calculate zakat on cash and savings?

Add the cash you hold and your bank and savings balances on the day you work it out, and enter the total on the first line. The International Islamic Fiqh Academy treats paper money like gold and silver for zakat. If the total after the debts you take off reaches the nisab and a lunar year has passed, the calculator shows 2.5% of it: on £10,000 that is £250 (arithmetic only).

How do I calculate zakat on my salary?

None of the sources on this page discusses salary as such. They apply zakat once a year has passed over wealth that reaches the nisab, so the calculator works on what you hold on your zakat date. So enter what is in your accounts on your zakat date. How to treat money that arrived partway through the year is a question for a scholar you trust.

How do I calculate zakat on gold in tola?

Multiply the tola by 11.664 to get grams, then multiply by the price per gram. The weight helper in the calculator does this for you. We get it by dividing the 87.48 g that Darul Ifta Birmingham fatwa 07042 gives for 7.5 tola by 7.5. At a made-up price of £100 per gram, 10 tola (116.64 g) is worth £11,664, and 2.5% of that is £291.60.

Is this zakat calculator for the UK?

Yes. It works in pounds, and you enter the price per gram of gold and of silver in pounds from a UK bullion dealer, with the date of the price and where it came from. We do not show a price and we use no automatic price feed, because prices change every day and an old one would give a wrong nisab: a price with no date, or more than 7 days old, is not used. Everything is worked out on your device; nothing you type is sent or saved.

Should I use the gold or the silver nisab?

The calculator shows the gold and silver nisab side by side, each with its own price, and does not choose for you. Darul Ifta Birmingham fatwa 07042 says either is valid and advises silver for those with enough disposable income, as advice only. IslamWeb fatwa 120628 reports that a few scholars value banknotes by gold in all cases and the majority by the lower of the two. Follow your school or a scholar you trust.
