The short answer
This tasbih counter counts your dhikr with the numbers the hadith give. Sahih Muslim 596, graded sahih, gives 33, 33 and 34 after every prescribed prayer. Sahih Muslim 597, graded sahih, gives 33 each and a closing line. Sahih al-Bukhari 3113, graded sahih, gives 34, 33 and 33 at bedtime. Your count stays on this device.
What counts do the hadith give for tasbih?
Ka'b ibn 'Ujrah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, saying that there are remembrances after every prescribed prayer whose sayer will not be disappointed: "Glory be to Allah" 33 times, "Praise be to Allah" 33 times and "Allah is most Great" 34 times 1. That is Sahih Muslim 596, sahih by its inclusion in Sahih Muslim.
Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported a second wording, Sahih Muslim 597, also sahih by inclusion. In it each of the three is said 33 times, 99 in all, and the hundred is completed with a declaration that none is worshipped but Allah alone, with no partner, to whom dominion and praise belong 2. The report says the person's sins are forgiven even if they are like the foam of the sea.
Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that Fatimah, may Allah be pleased with her, had asked for a servant, and that the Prophet told them both, when they go to bed, to say Allahu akbar 34 times, Alhamdulillah 33 times and Subhanallah 33 times, calling it better for them than what they had asked for 3. That is Sahih al-Bukhari 3113, sahih by inclusion.
These are separate reports with different counts and settings. The counter offers each one as it stands and does not merge them.
Do the reports say to count on beads or fingers?
No. The three reports give the counts and the words, and none of them names a way of counting. This counter is a convenience for keeping track; it is not part of what the reports describe.
Is my count saved?
The count is kept in this browser's own storage, so it is still there if you close the page and come back on the same device. Nothing is sent to us or anyone else. Reset clears it. In a private window it may not be kept at all.
I used to lose count halfway through the tasbih after prayer and start again. In the end I settled on one count, kept track on my fingers as I went, and stopped second-guessing myself.
Questions people ask
Is it 33 or 34 Allahu akbar after prayer?
Both are reported. Sahih Muslim 596, graded sahih, gives 34 after every prescribed prayer. Sahih Muslim 597, graded sahih, gives 33 and then a closing line to make a hundred. They are separate reports, and this counter offers each one as it is.
What is the tasbih of Fatimah?
In Sahih al-Bukhari 3113, graded sahih, the Prophet taught Ali and Fatimah to say Allahu akbar 34 times, Alhamdulillah 33 times and Subhanallah 33 times when they go to bed. The bedtime setting follows that order.
Can I set my own number?
Yes. The free count lets you set a target or count without one. A number you choose is your own choice, not a count from these reports.
Is my count saved or sent anywhere?
Your count is kept in this browser only, so it is still there if you close the page and come back. Nothing is sent. Reset clears it.
