The short answer
Masjid al-Haram is the Grand Mosque in Makkah, with the Kaaba at its centre, according to Saudipedia. Makkah is the city, the mosque is the place of worship around the Kaaba, and the Kaaba is the structure inside it. Quran 2:144 directs believers to turn towards Al-Masjid al-Haram in prayer.
Where is Mecca and where is Masjid al-Haram?
Makkah is also spelt Mecca in English. Saudipedia places the Grand Mosque in the centre of Makkah al-Mukarramah, and describes it as the mosque that houses the Kaaba, which is situated in its centre.3 Around the Kaaba is the Mataf, a marble-paved courtyard where tawaf, walking round the Kaaba in worship, is performed.3
City, mosque or Kaaba: which is which?
A travel plan or a guide may use any of these three names.
| Name | What it identifies |
|---|---|
| Makkah or Mecca | The city |
| Masjid al-Haram or the Grand Mosque | The mosque that houses the Kaaba, according to Saudipedia |
| The Kaaba | The structure at the centre of the mosque, according to Saudipedia |
Saudipedia's names section also lists al-Masjid al-Haram as another name for the Kaaba itself, so the name can be used in more than one sense.3 This page uses it for the mosque.
A hotel in Makkah is a place in the city. It is not the Kaaba or the mosque.
Why do Muslims face Masjid al-Haram in prayer?
Al-Baqarah 2:144 tells believers to turn their faces towards Al-Masjid al-Haram in prayer, wherever they may be.4
The English under each verse is adapted from Pickthall's translation. Words in brackets, such as "O Muhammad" and "at Makka", are the translator's, and Al Imran 3:96 spells Bakkah as "Becca".
Qibla is the direction faced in prayer. The verse names the Sacred Mosque but gives no compass bearing. A bearing depends on where you stand, so a photograph of the Kaaba does not give it. The qibla finder works out the bearing from your location.
What does the Quran say about the House and its foundations?
Al-Baqarah 2:125 to 127 calls the House a resort for mankind and a sanctuary. It names the place where Ibrahim, peace be upon him, stood as a place of prayer. It then records Ibrahim and Ismail, peace be upon them, raising the foundations of the House and asking Allah to accept from them.5
These verses give no calendar date for the building, and they do not name the Kaaba. The Kaaba page sets out the later reports on rebuilding, with their sources.
What does Al Imran say about the House at Bakkah?
Al Imran 3:96 calls the first House appointed for mankind, at Bakkah, a blessed place and a guidance for the peoples. The next verse names plain signs, including the place where Ibrahim stood up to pray, says that whoever enters it is safe, and makes pilgrimage to the House a duty for those able to find a way to it.6
The verses name Bakkah and do not say which city it is. In his commentary on 3:96 (Tafsir al-Qur'an al-'Azim, vol. 2, p. 78), Ibn Kathir describes Bakkah as a name for Makkah on the well-known view, and also records narrower explanations referring to the House and its surrounding area 7.
What is the reported reward for prayer there?
Two reports need to be kept separate when discussing the numbers.
Sahih al-Bukhari 1190, narrated by Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, reports the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, saying that prayer in his mosque is better than a thousand prayers elsewhere, with the exception of Masjid al-Haram.1 It is sahih by the collection's own convention for Sahih al-Bukhari, which is not a grader's verdict on this report.
1AuthenticSahih al-Bukhari 1190
Bukhari's report names no figure for Masjid al-Haram.
Sunan Ibn Majah 1406, narrated by Jabir, may Allah be pleased with him, is a separate report. It has its own clause on the Prophet's mosque, and it adds that a prayer in Masjid al-Haram is better than 100,000 prayers elsewhere.2 It carries one grading, sahih.
2AuthenticSunan Ibn Majah 1406
| Report | What its wording establishes |
|---|---|
| Sahih al-Bukhari 1190 | The 1,000 comparison for the Prophet's mosque, with Masjid al-Haram excepted |
| Sunan Ibn Majah 1406 | Its own 1,000 clause for the Prophet's mosque, Masjid al-Haram excepted, and the separate 100,000 comparison for Masjid al-Haram |
How does Masjid al-Haram relate to Umrah?
Inside the mosque are the Kaaba and the tawaf area. Saudipedia also lists Maqam Ibrahim, the stone on which Ibrahim stood while building the Kaaba, among the mosque's religious landmarks. It places the Zamzam well east of the Kaaba, in Sahn al-Mataf.3
Knowing which place is which helps when you read a guide to Umrah. Start with the city, the mosque and the Kaaba, then follow the steps in order. How to perform Umrah sets them out with their conditions. Questions about illness, mobility, menstruation or a mistake during worship need advice matched to your own circumstances, from a scholar you trust.
What should you check before a visit?
Check current official arrangements for the Grand Mosque and for your trip. Entry arrangements, access routes and services can change, so use current official information for those decisions.
When I booked my first Umrah, the itinerary listed Makkah, Masjid al-Haram and the Kaaba as if they were three separate places. I had to ask my cousin which was which. When I finally walked in and saw the Kaaba, the names made sense.
