Jumma Mubarak: meaning, messages and where scholars differ

What the words mean, how the greeting is written in Arabic, messages and duas to send, and where the scholars differ on it.

By Haroon AliSources checked 21 October 2026

We explain and attribute; we do not issue fatwas.

The short answer

Jumma Mubarak means "blessed Friday", a greeting sent on Fridays. We found no hadith that uses it, and scholars differ: Sulayman al-Majid, in a fatwa on his website, holds a fixed Friday greeting is not prescribed, while Jordan's fatwa committee allows it as a dua. The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, called Friday the best day the sun rises on (Sahih Muslim 854, graded sahih).

How is Jumma Mubarak written in Arabic?

As written in fatwa 3554, below

جمعة مباركة

jumuʿah mubārakah

A blessed Friday

Also spelt Jummah Mubarak, Juma Mubarak and Jumu'ah Mubarak: the same two words. The Arabic adds -ah to mubarak to match the feminine word jumu'ah.

What does Jumma Mubarak mean?

Arabic reads right to left, so the first word is on the right.

  1. ٱلْجُمُعَةِal-jumuʿahthe congregation; FridayAl-Jumu'ah 62:9 calls Friday yawm al-jumu'ah, the day of congregation.
  2. مُبَـٰرَكٌmubārakblessed, full of blessingSaid of the Quran in Sad 38:29.

In English, Jumma Mubarak is "blessed Friday", or "have a blessed Friday".

Jumma Mubarak messages, wishes and quotes

By the time the family group chat has sent its fourth Jumma Mubarak rose, you may want a message of your own to send back. Here are some, none promising a reward:

  • "Jumma Mubarak! Wishing you a blessed Friday."
  • "Jumma Mubarak. Remembering you in my duas today."
  • "Jummah Mubarak. Keeping the people of Palestine in my duas today."
  • "Jumma Mubarak. Allahumma rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanah wa fil-akhirati hasanah wa qina 'adhaban-nar."

Sourced quotes, with reference and grade:

  • "The best day on which the sun has risen is Friday." (Sahih Muslim 854, graded sahih)
  • "O you who believe! When the call is heard for the prayer of the day of congregation, haste to remembrance of Allah and leave your trading." (Al-Jumu'ah 62:9)
  • "There is an hour on Friday: a Muslim standing in prayer who asks Allah for something at that hour is given it." (Sahih al-Bukhari 935, graded sahih)
  • "Among the best of your days is Friday, so send much blessing on me on it." (Sunan Abi Dawud 1047, graded differently)

What dua can you say on Jummah?

Two duas from authentic hadith. The first is a wording of the blessing on the Prophet that the Friday hadith below asks for, which itself gives no wording; the second is not tied to Friday by its narration.

The blessing on the Prophet

Ka'b ibn 'Ujrah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that when the companions asked how to send blessings on him, the Prophet taught these words:

Sahih al-Bukhari 6357

allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa ʿalā āli muḥammad, kamā ṣallayta ʿalā āli ibrāhīm, innaka ḥamīdun majīd. allāhumma bārik ʿalā muḥammadin wa ʿalā āli muḥammad, kamā bārakta ʿalā āli ibrāhīm, innaka ḥamīdun majīd

O Allah, send blessings on Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You sent blessings on the family of Ibrahim; You are Praiseworthy, Glorious. O Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You blessed the family of Ibrahim; You are Praiseworthy, Glorious.

4AuthenticSahih al-Bukhari 6357

The dua the Prophet made most often

Anas ibn Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, said the dua the Prophet made most often was:

Sahih al-Bukhari 6389

اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً، وَفِي الآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً، وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

allāhumma rabbanā ātinā fi d-dunyā ḥasanah, wa fi l-ākhirati ḥasanah, wa qinā ʿadhāba n-nār

O Allah, our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.

5AuthenticSahih al-Bukhari 6389

Can you say Jumma Mubarak? Where scholars differ

We found no hadith in which the Prophet or his companions use a fixed Friday greeting (source 6). Two fatwas we read in full draw different conclusions from that.

Not prescribedAllowed as a dua
WhoSulayman al-Majid, fatwa 969 on his website, 22 October 2008 (source 7)The Fatwa Committee of Jordan's General Iftaa Department, fatwa 3554, 13 February 2020 (source 8)
Their reasoningAl-Majid, asked about congratulating people on Friday with phrases such as "Jumu'ah mubarakah", places it among duas and dhikr (remembrance of Allah) in which one keeps to what is reported; had it been good, he says, the Prophet and his companions would have done it first. The Jordan fatwa, asked about congratulating or making dua on Friday with the phrase, holds that a dua need not come word for word from the Sunnah; "Jumu'ah mubarakah" asks that your Friday be blessed, and may not be called a bid'ah (an innovation in religion) or forbidden.
Their cautionIn a later answer (fatwa 13566), on the phrase at the end of a message, al-Majid says he does not think one should keep to it constantly. The Jordan fatwa warns against attributing the phrase to the Prophet, since no text reports it from him.

Neither answer reports the phrase from the Prophet.

Why is Friday special in Islam?

Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported the Prophet saying that the best day on which the sun has risen is Friday. On it Adam, peace be upon him, was created, on it he was made to enter Paradise, and on it he was sent out of it.

1AuthenticSahih Muslim 854

The Quran names the day and its prayer:

Al-Jumu'ah 62:9O you who believe! When the call is heard for the prayer of the day of congregation, haste to remembrance of Allah and leave your trading. That is better for you if you did but know.

The hour of response

Abu Hurayrah also reported that the Prophet spoke of an hour on Friday: a Muslim standing in prayer who asks Allah for something at that hour is given it. He indicated with his hand that it is short.

2AuthenticSahih al-Bukhari 935

Sending blessings on the Prophet

Aws ibn Aws, may Allah be pleased with him, reported the Prophet saying that Friday is among the best of your days, so send much blessing on him on it, for your blessing is presented to him. It is graded differently: six of the graders we list accept it, and one notes a hidden defect in its chain.

3Graded differently Sunan Abi Dawud 1047

Try it: what would you say?

Two quick questions. Pick an answer; each one explains itself.

  1. 1What does mubarak mean?

Answer: Blessed. Mubarak means blessed. Jumu'ah is Friday, the day of congregation in Al-Jumu'ah 62:9.

  2. 2The hour on Friday that the Prophet described: what did he say happens in it?

Answer: A Muslim praying who asks Allah for something is given it. Standing in prayer and asking Allah for something at that hour. He indicated that it is short. Source 2

Questions people ask

Is saying Jumma Mubarak bid'ah?

Answers differ. One scholar's fatwa holds that a fixed Friday greeting is not prescribed; a fatwa committee holds that it is allowed as a dua and may not be called bid'ah. Both, with their names and sources, are in the table above.

How do you reply to Jumma Mubarak?

Our search of sunnah.com and dorar.net found no narration that sets a reply.
